To find out whom the biggest investors turn to for advice on Asia ex-Japan, Institutional Investor solicited the opinions of more than 1,100 buy-side analysts and portfolio managers at more than 500 institutions running an estimated total of more than $1.03 trillion in non-Japanese Asian equities. The names of those surveyed and the institutions they work for are kept confidential to ensure their continuing cooperation.
To rank analysts for our 14th annual All-Asia Research Team, we combined votes for firms and individuals; a numerical score was produced for each firm by weighting each vote based on the respondent’s Asia ex-Japan equity assets under management and on the rank awarded to the firm or individual (first, second, third or fourth place). Those scores were used to determine the ranking. Teams were designated runners-up when their scores came within 35 percent of the third-teamers’ scores. We have highlighted the analyst identified by his or her employer as the leader of the firm’s team in a given category. Analysts who switched firms after March 16, 2007, are cited at their previous organizations.
The All-Asia Research Team includes 30 categories of industry, country and macro research. Health Care & Pharmaceuticals is being published for the first time; the category has been polled in previous surveys but responses failed to meet the minimum voting requirements to warrant publication. Small-Cap Companies, which previously had appeared under Industries, has been moved to Strategy & Economics to more accurately reflect the approach used by sell-side firms that cover the sector.
